Filing your tax return can cause stress, especially as deadlines approach. Understanding the key dates helps you avoid penalties and keep your financial affairs in order.

Important dates for tax return

Tax deadlines vary by type of declaration and taxpayer. In the Netherlands, May 1 is the standard deadline for the income tax return of individuals. For entrepreneurs, different deadlines may apply.

Other important dates: January 31 for employer annual statements, and quarterly deadlines (April, July, October, January) apply for VAT returns. Note these dates in your calendar in a timely manner.

Requesting a deferral and the consequences

Can't you submit your tax return on time? Then you can request an extension from the Tax Authorities. This gives extra time for the paperwork, but does not postpone the payment obligation.

Interest on unpaid taxes continues from the original deadline. Deferral prevents a penalty for late filing, but not for late payment. Estimate your tax debt as accurately as possible.

How to never miss deadlines again

Organize your documents early in the year, use digital reminders, and consider tax software or a professional advisor. Always start well in advance — this significantly reduces the chance of errors.

For self-employed individuals, a quarterly VAT return applies. DB Legal & Tax can take over the full monitoring of your tax obligations, so you never miss a deadline again.
